A glycerite is a type of herbal medicine– herbs extracted in vegetable glycerine. At HeartBeet Gardens, we only use high quality, Certified Organic, food grade vegetable glycerine and locally sourced, organic herbs.

There are pros and cons to each type of menstruum used in herbal medicine, but whenever possible we like to make glycerites as opposed to tinctures or syrups. Tinctures (herbs extracted in alcohol) typically have a longer shelf life than glycerites and are generally more potent. However, tinctures are intense to take and can burn/sting your mouth when taking them. Some people are sober or in recovery and would prefer not to take alcoholic extracts. We have found that glycerites are the most family-friendly medicines– children love the sweet, delicious flavor of glycerites. Another plus is glycerites do not spike your blood sugar levels like syrups do.

These glycerites have a shelf life of about three years from the day you open it. To ensure your medicine lasts, store it in a cool, dark place, as sunlight and heat will degrade the product more quickly.

A salve is a topical application of herbal medicine. Typically, herbs are extracted in oil and beeswax is added. Our salves are made with certified organic herbs, therapeutic grade organic essential oils, certified organic coconut oil and local beeswax from right here in the mountains.
-
We have found that people use their salves up way before they could go bad, but the shelf life is about two years from when you first open it. To ensure longevity of your salve, keep it out of direct sunlight, away from heat, and be careful not to get water in it.
Also, remember that our salves are aiding conditions that are contagious by nature. We highly suggest using a q-tip or sterile finger when using your salve. DO NOT dip the same finger back into the salve. For example, our Funk-Buster Salve helps with athlete’s foot. If you were to rub the salve on your fungal infection and then dip your finger back into your salve, you have contaminated your salve. So always use a fresh q-tip or finger to ensure the longevity of your product.

We believe there is power both in modern, allopathic medicine and herbal medicine. True wisdom is knowing when to call on each, and often both can be utilized at the same time! We have found that in the modern day American lifestyle, allopathic medicine tends to be the go-to without a single question. In just a couple generations, our medicine has gone from homemade remedies and natural plant medicines to outsourcing all of our power to doctors and large pharmaceutical corporations without question. There is, without a doubt, a place for modern medicine for certain infections, emergency care, etc. However, herbal medicine is powerful and effective for so many ailments. We want to help families and individuals take charge of their own health again. We are a part of the earth, and these plants are our allies. Our products are tried and true, and we feel confident that they will help you and your family.
